"Autumn Arrangement"

This is from a Autumn arrangement that I painted on a very stormy afternoon here in the Sierra foothills. I have been painting outdoors quite a bit before Winter gets up here and makes any plein air work problematic.  The very good painter Eric Jacobsen, who does wonderful still lifes, spends more time on the arrangement itself than on the actual painting.

"Sierra Vineyard" Plein Air

Using my small pochade box I was up painting at a remote vineyard in the Sierra foothills. This vineyard will see snow soon!  I'll be back next week for one more session before the colors are gone for the year. I did another 6"x8" of this vineyard the next morning from my studio using the leftover paint and palette knifes only. Good fun!

"Sierra Lake - Before the Storm" Plein Air

Painting just above the town of Auburn in the mid-morning. The rain was just starting as I had setup and made for a quick little painting with my 6"x8"pochade box.  The Autumn colors where muted from the incoming storm this morning at this little lake.

"Coronado Island - San Diego" Plein Air

Plein air painting in San Diego today as the fog was burning off. This is on Coronado Island looking towards Point Loma. Staying at the very beautiful Hotel Del Coronado. Trying out my small pochade paint box plein air for the first time. Good fun!

Picking a Location to Paint? - "Blackwood Canyon Creek"

I was talking to the North Coast painter (John Hewitt) this past weekend in Lake Tahoe about locations to paint and he's done what only one other painter I know of has done and that's publish a book on his work and include the locations of his favorite sites. If you are painting up on the north coast of California then this book would be a great resource for painters or photographers. I think I'll start compiling a list of painting locations up in the Lake Tahoe region...

"Benicia - Waterfront" Plein Air

2nd Annual Benicia Plein Air event. There was 60 painters in attendance this year! Great judging by Randall Sexton. This was from the water front off of W H St. Great painting location...I did a second painting just after this of the tug boat station.

"Avila Beach - Central Coast"

Avila Beach down the central coast is always a favorite destination. This is a mid-afternoon view. This size is a bit of a deviation from my other paintings as I've been painting with big sheets of canvas and then cutting them down to size and adhering them to boards to paint on. The Russian impressionists favored this size for some reason...?

"Napa Dreaming" Large Painting

This location is not far from the famous The French Laundry restaurant, which I have not had the pleasure of dining. I have painted plein air here a few times and this is the second big painting from that location. Great fun. Brushes and palette knifes for texture. Looks great in a black with gold lip frame.
